Happy Birthday Madeleine L'Engle!

So how strange is it that I just posted a book review on the graphic novel version of one of my favorite Madeleine L'Engle books, and today is her birthday!  Good timing!

If you don't know who Madeleine L'Engle is, here's a link to a brief biography from her website.  Make sure to take time to peruse her website, too!  It lists all the books she's ever written, plus it includes lots of news articles about her and info about what people are still doing to celebrate her work.

L'Engle was a very famous author of children's and young adult literature.  While she wrote over 60 books in her lifetime, she is most remembered for her classic, A Wrinkle in Time.  This book is so popular, according to her obituary in the New York Times, "It proved to be her masterpiece, winning the John Newbery Medal as the best children’s book of 1963 and selling, so far, eight million copies. It is now in its 69th printing."  WOW!  Talk about impressive, plus that obituary was written 5 years ago when she died...imagine how many more copies have sold since then!  And all this for a book that was rejected 26 times before a publisher finally realized what a great book she had written and snatched it up!  If you look closely at the book cover in the image above, they are all different covers for the same book!

If you haven't read it yet, I highly recommend A Wrinkle in Time (followed by all the rest of the books in the series!).  Even if you don't read the rest of the books, A Wrinkle in Time stands up very well by itself.  Another one of my favorite books by her is called Troubling A Star, and this book is NOT part of a series.

You can find all of these books and more at the Library, so get in today find your next favorite author!
